On March 6, 2025, Washington State’s Senate Joint Resolution 8204 (SJR 8204) was filed in the Washington State legislature. SJR 8204 is a proposed Amendment to the Washington State Constitution, which would guarantee abortion, through all stages of pregnancy, without restriction.
SJR 8204 would also declare that “gender-affirming care decisions” are constitutional rights. This provision encompasses hormone treatments, surgeries, and other interventions without any age restrictions or parental consent requirements.
Finally, SJR 8204 guarantees “assisted reproductive technology” (surrogacy, IVF, and beyond) without limits or clarification. The bill information page is: https://app.leg.wa.gov/BillSummary/?BillNumber=8204&Year=2025&Initiative=false
You can use the bill information page to review SJR 8204 and to contact your own legislators in opposition to this measure. State Senator Mike Chapman (D) from our 24th Legislative District co-sponsored this resolution. You can phone in your opposition by calling 800 562 6000.
Because SJR 8204 is a proposed constitutional amendment (rather than a mere law) it needs to gain 2/3 support in both the state House and Senate in order to pass. The Democrats, who are unanimously pro-abortion, are a few votes short of the two-thirds majority. But if even a handful of Republicans vote in favor of SB 8204, it will then be placed on the ballot where it can (and likely will) pass with a simple majority.
Our best bet in defeating this proposed amendment is to convince ALL Republican legislators to vote “NO” on SJR 8204. We therefore need to target Republican lawmakers to oppose this measure.
